Starbucks Japan launched the Discovery Series on July 22, 2026, in stores across Japan and on the official online store. It’s the successor to the Been There Series JAPAN, and it goes deeper into local culture than any regional line before it.
The design process is the interesting part. Starbucks’ product team traveled to each region and held roundtables with 10 to 15 local store partners. The designs come out of those conversations — not tourist checklists. Osaka’s design references the local “ame-chan” candy-sharing culture. Fukuoka’s picks up the famous vendor calls of its street stalls. That’s the kind of detail you only get from people who live there.
And yes, the hidden paper cup tradition continues. Every design in the series has a Starbucks paper cup tucked somewhere in the artwork. Finding it is half the fun.

Each design is sold only in its own region. The Osaka mug is sold in Osaka, the Fukuoka mug in Fukuoka. That regional exclusivity is exactly what makes completing a set hard — and what makes the aftermarket interesting.

To understand why collectors care, you need the lineage. Here’s the short version.
You Are Here Collection (2012–). The global original. Launched in North America, now spanning 20+ countries and 180+ designs including city versions. The concept: bring a mug home from your travels, and every coffee after that takes you back there. It’s still running worldwide — but Japan built its own path.
Japan Geography Series (2016–2021). Japan’s first homegrown regional line. Sold for roughly five years, discontinued in 2021. Boxed examples in good condition are getting scarce, and this is the series I get the most requests for as a seller. When one sells, I often can’t restock it.
Been There Series JAPAN (2021–2026). Launched October 13, 2021, covering 20 areas. An American illustrator drew the artwork, but the content came from interviews with local store staff — regional food, local culture, the feel of each place. Every mug hides a tiny Starbucks paper cup in the design. These are the mugs now heading into discontinued territory.
Discovery Series (2026–). The new generation, built on partner roundtables and deeper local stories. This is what you’ll find in Japanese stores right now.
What This Means If You Own Been There Mugs
Here’s my honest read as someone who trades in this market daily.
When a Starbucks Japan series ends, remaining store stock sells through, and then the only supply is the aftermarket. I watched this exact pattern with the Japan Geography Series after 2021: prices moved slowly for a year, then climbed hard once boxed examples dried up. Been There is now entering that cycle.
But don’t panic-buy, and don’t panic-sell either. Three things actually determine value:
- Condition and box. A mug without its original box loses a big chunk of collector value. Chips or scratches, even more.
- Region rarity. Designs from less-visited prefectures had smaller print runs and fewer tourists buying spares. Those climb fastest.
- Timing. Right now some stores still have Been There stock at retail. If you want a specific region, this window is the cheapest it will ever be.
One caution: as prices rise, fakes follow. It happened with sakura releases. Check for the Japanese barcode sticker on the box and be suspicious of prices far below market.
